PROJECT UPDATE: Week of August 7, 2017

Construction Progress:

Work completed since last update:

  • Formed and poured concrete swales from Hina Lani to Kaloko Pond Road.

  • Completed grading and paved bottom lifts of asphalt at both Keahole Airport Road and OTEC intersection.

  • Paved shoulder top lift along north makai segment.

  • Installed drainage structures and street light footings along the south mauka segment.

  • Activated the temporary traffic signals at Kealakehe intersection.

Upcoming new work:

  • Subgrade, aggregate base course grading, and asphalt paving to continue south of Hulikoa.

  • Guardrail, temporary striping, and post mounted sign installation on the north makai segment.

Upcoming Traffic Transition:

The traffic transition is expected to occur at the end of August.  The date of the transition will be posted to the website in the near future.  Message boards will be placed along the highway and side roads in advance of the traffic transition, alerting the public to this future change.

In anticipation of the upcoming traffic transition, please refer to the Construction and Traffic Control Stage 3 diagram below.

The Northbound traffic leaving Kona will shift from the existing pavement to the new pavement between Hina Lani and Hulikoa Drive.  The Northbound traffic will shift back to the existing pavement north of the Keahole Airport Road.

The Southbound traffic heading toward Kona will shift from the existing pavement to the new pavement north of Keahole Airport Road.  The Southbound traffic will shift back to the existing pavement at the paved crossover between Hulikoa Drive and Hina Lani. 

Please continue to help us keep motorists, bikers, pedestrians, and our workers safe by respecting the posted work zone speeds.  In addition, please remember the new asphalt paving in the North segment of the project is still an active work zone. For your own safety, this area is currently closed to the general public for all vehicular traffic and all exercising, including walking, biking, and jogging.
